Venezuela from the Inside, Oct. 6, 12-1 pm
Estimados estudiantes de BI:
Depending on your interest, I would like to organize a group of you to attend this event with me. It sounds like a great opportunity to learn about politics and current society in Venezuela, if those are topics of interest to you. Please let me know if you think this is something you would like to attend so I can get an idea of how many students I would need to acquire space for and so I know what teachers/classes might be impacted. I'm not sure how much space is available or how many students I will be permitted to take so let me know ASAP if you want to reserve a spot. I'll put a sign up sheet on my door or you can confirm your interest via e-mail. We will need time to arrange transportation, to receive permission from the school and your teachers for you to miss class, and to get parent permission slips signed and returned. We would likely leave school at 11:35 (after lunch/beginning of period 5) and return by 1:20 so you would be missing periods 5 and 6.
!Gracias!

Holy frijoles! It's time for school!
Seasoned IB students: Quiero que ustedes will bring the following items with you to class:
• your textbook if you kept it over the summer. I need these ASAP so I can check them out to the new cohort.
• your workbook
• the podcast CD
• and the brief working notes you took on the podcasts you listened to
I sense that the horario information for students new to IB was not made too clear this year so below you will find info for your AM classes (PM schedule should remain the same as last year for both IB-11 and IB-12….as far as I know). I think the schedule is the same for returning IB students.

Change of plans for AB INITIO
I just wanted to alert you to a slight change of plans. We will be doing our Interactive Oral Activity (IB exam prep) on Thursday (and Friday for period 2)of this week instead of tomorrow (el martes). Tomorrow we will have a brief review for our quiz on Wednesday (over vocab, saber/conocer, and indirect objet pronouns) and we will begin the preterite tense (notes practice, etc.)
Lo siento por el last minute change, but I think this will work better with the hectic schedule this week with some students being gone Thurs/Fri period 2 for ACT pre-testing procedures.
Mil gracias!
Sra. Fred

Ab Initio Reminder: Spring Break/ Europe Trip tarea
It wouldn’t hurt to be interdisciplinary and to consider the elements and principles of art (space, color, movement/rhythm, balance, emphasis, proportion, etc.) in composing your photo!
For those of you who departed early for Spring Break and were not in attendance for our last class, remember that you also need to have completed the transcription, editing, and written development of your Oral Practice/Dibujo Assignment. This will be due on Monday/Es para el lunes.
De compras en los mercados de artesanías
In Mexican Mercados de artesanías one can find a great variety of handcrafted items (hecho a mano) that reflect la cultura indígena and blend old traditions with new ones. Textiles (clothing, blankets, lace), leather goods (purses, shoes, belts), jewelry, pottery, paintings/drawings, and alebrije (whimsically painted animals carved from wood) are all traditional items one can seek out in these markets to try out their skill at el regateo.
Intercultural comparison: How do food markets in México compare to food/produce markets and supermarkets in the EE.UU.? What similarities/differences can you find and how are those a reflection of the respective culture?

Just a note to let you know that I have added a link in the Enlaces section for the Conjuguemos website for those of you who may wish to use the site to practice verb conjugations and to review lesson vocabulary. Let me know if you encounter any problems using the site. If we determine the need I will set up a school account so each of you can have a student login.

As many of you go about your holiday shopping, I just thought I'd take this opportunity to encourage you to reflect on how we as US consumers are part of a greater, global economy. This video about where stuff comes from, how it's processed and where it ends up illustrates just how far reaching the consequences of purchasing lots of "stuff" can be for others and ourselves. Our consumerism feeds into a lot of the problems facing developing countries in central and south america such as child labor, toxic pollution, mass migration from rural communities that can no longer sustain themselves due to loss of resources to huge cities to find any available work to ensure survival, etc. Many kids your age and younger are working 12 or more hours a day in factories making products for developed nations like ours. This video is about 20 minutes long so make sure you have enough time to view in full. (Here's the link in case you wish to view it in a larger format (recommended!) http://www.storyofstuff.com/ ) I think you'll find it an interesting and worthwhile viewing. It is my hope that you'll approach your holiday shopping with more international-mindedness and with a greater sense of your global responsibility. Perhaps this season nature your creative side instead of your consumer side and make your own holiday gifts. At the very least, use your purchasing power with an increased awareness of the individuals, communities, environments and economies around the world that might have been impacted in the making of whatver "stuff" you buy. ¡Felices fiestas!

Humor con verbos...
decir/dice = to say or tell/ she says
gritar/gritando = to yell/yelling
dime = give me
a lo cual = to which
-- A ver, Jaimito.

These tortugas hatch underground from eggs and them squirm to the surface. Then they book-it to the high seas (in this clip they do so despite quite a large audience of gawkers who have conveniently dug them a slight trench so they can find their way more easily. It seems to be quite a large feat considering that thir heads seem to weigh more than their bodies. :)
(You can probably skip the first 1:45 of this clip.)
